Thoughts of suicide are rare but those who experience them are recognized and connected to help before the thoughts become persistent and serious
If someone struggling reaches out for help those around them know how to respond and where to connect them for extra care
If someone struggling is connected to extra care, that care is knowledgeable and prepared to support a person with thoughts of suicide
After a person leaves emergency care, they are left with a plan to keep themselves safe, a schedule for what to do next and when, and they are followed up on

This little cutie was part of the inspiration for the Yellow Canary Project.

The metaphor of the yellow canary comes from the stories of miners who would take caged canaries down into the mines with them. They served as messengers to warn miners of dangerous gas leaks that they could not see or smell. The canaries would react to the presence of gas, and the miners were able to quickly escape to safety.

In a similar way, mental health struggles and thoughts of suicide often go unseen and unnoticed by others. But the dangers are still very real. We need to learn to be canaries, to recognize warning signs, to see what is often overlooked, and alert people that there is a path to safety.

Together, we can help end suicide in our community. You can be a yellow canary. Here at Failsafe for life, it’s our mission to help educate and teach our community how to identify the signs, and how to respond once you do. QPR Training is a wonderful tool to help educate and empower people in our community. The skills you learn in this course will allow you to offer life saving support if the situation were to ever arise.

Our next QPR Trainings will be for ages 15 and up.

Board member and founder of Shine Logan’s Light, Brandy, and FailSafe’s Executive Director, Sabrina, were invited to the art classroom of Jennifer Compau at University High to talk with the students about mental health and suicide.

They also got a preview of the next round of yellow canary art projects, some of which will be featured at our Spring for Hope event!

These young adults-their stories and their talent-are incredible! This is the kind of magic that happens when we involve people from every vantage point to help us in our mission to end suicide deaths in our community.
